Built for Portugal
😩 Filing in Portugal as an expat

Modelo 3 wasn't designed for you

If you've ever opened Portal das Finanças as an expat, you know these three feelings.

Portal das Finanças speaks Portuguese, and only Portuguese

Modelo 3 is 50 pages of legal Portuguese with no English option. Anexo J alone has ten sub-quadros. If you guess wrong, you don't find out until a fine arrives months later.

"I spent four hours googling 'rendimentos obtidos no estrangeiro' before I gave up and paid an accountant €600 to do it wrong anyway."

You don't know which special regime saves you the most

Legacy NHR closed to new applicants in 2024. IFICI replaced it. IRS Jovem exists for younger filers. Each has different eligibility, different rates, different deadlines. Most filers pick wrong, or miss the window entirely.

"I assumed my NHR carried over. Turns out I needed to apply for IFICI by January 15. I missed it by six weeks and lost €11,000 in tax savings."

Generic Portuguese accountants don't get expat situations

Your local accountant files perfect Modelo 3s for Portuguese employees. They've never seen a US W-2, a UK pension, RSU vesting, or a foreign brokerage statement. So they either skip it on Anexo J, or hand you a bigger bill without taking the time to understand your situation.

"I paid two different accountants hundreds of euros, and neither one took the time to actually understand my US income. I was still filing wrong in October."

Legacy NHR closed to new applicants in 2024. IFICI replaced it. IRS Jovem applies for younger filers. Each has different eligibility, different rates, and different deadlines. ExpaTax checks all three against your situation and applies whichever lowers your tax bill the most.

  • Compares Legacy NHR · IFICI · IRS Jovem · standard tax side by side
  • Flags missed deadlines (IFICI's Jan 15 window costs filers €10K+ a year)

👋 Why ExpaTax

Built by expats, with real Portuguese accountants

ExpaTax is a small team of accountants and engineers in Lisbon. We built it because we were tired of paying accountants hundreds of euros who never took the time to actually understand our situation.

Built by expats who file in Portugal

Our team are themselves expats living in Portugal. We've filed Modelo 3 with Anexo J every year. We know what's hard because we've lived it.

Real Portuguese accountants sign off

Every signoff and full-service filing is reviewed by an OCC-registered Portuguese accountant in our network. Real human, real signature, real accountability, not just AI.

Personal attention to your situation

We take the time to understand your specific income, residency, and regime. Most Portuguese accountants don't, and that's why generic Modelo 3s get filed wrong for expats.

Free assessment before you commit

Run the 90-second assessment, see your full picture, then decide if you want our help filing. No payment until you're ready to file.

❓ FAQ

Questions expats ask before they sign up

Quick, honest answers to the things people send us at filing time.

Do I need to file Modelo 3 in Portugal?
If you spent more than 183 days in Portugal in 2025, or you kept a habitual residence here on 31 December, yes: you're a Portuguese tax resident and you have to file Modelo 3 between 1 April and 30 June 2026. Even if you owe €0 because of NHR.
What's the difference between NHR and IFICI?
Legacy NHR closed to new applicants in 2024. If you registered before then, you keep it for 10 years from registration. IFICI (sometimes called NHR 2.0) replaced it from 2024. Both give qualifying expats a 20% flat tax on certain Portuguese income, but the eligibility rules and pension treatment differ. ExpaTax checks both against your profile in the free assessment.
What is Anexo J and do I need it?
Anexo J is the schedule of Modelo 3 where you declare any income earned outside Portugal: foreign salary, foreign dividends, foreign rental, capital gains on overseas brokerage accounts, foreign pensions. If you're an expat with any income paid by a non-Portuguese entity, you almost certainly need to file it. ExpaTax prepares Anexo J automatically.
Are you actually filing my Modelo 3, or just preparing it?
On Prepared (€79) we prepare your full Modelo 3 and give you a step-by-step submission guide for Portal das Finanças. You submit it yourself, no accountant signoff. On Signed & filed (€149) and Complex & priority (€300), a licensed Portuguese accountant reviews and signs off, and we file it for you. Either way you see and approve the return before it goes in.
Who is the accountant on the signed packages?
A licensed Portuguese accountant from our partner network, not an offshore agent, not "AI". They review every quadro of your Modelo 3, sign off in writing, and stay available if AT pushes back later. They've all worked with expat filers before, so US W-2s, RSUs, foreign brokerages and crypto don't surprise them.
How long does the whole thing take?
The free assessment is about 90 seconds. The full intake (income, accounts, regime) is 4–7 minutes. After that ExpaTax generates your full Modelo 3 in under 30 seconds. On Signed & filed, add 2–4 business days for accountant review and filing. Complex & priority returns get priority turnaround.
Do you handle freelancers / self-employed (Categoria B)?
Yes. ExpaTax handles both the simplified regime (regime simplificado) and organised accounting (contabilidade organizada) for Categoria B income, including the standard 75% income coefficient, social security calculations, and the relevant VAT treatment if applicable.
What about crypto, RSUs, real estate?
Crypto is handled per the 2023 PT rules (0% on assets held ≥365 days, 28% flat below). RSU vesting goes into Anexo J as Categoria A income, and subsequent sales into Anexo J Quadro 9.2 as capital gains. Foreign real estate rental goes into Anexo J Quadro 6. All built in, no extra fees.
Do you support Madeira and the Azores?
Yes. Modelo 3 supports all three Portuguese territories (Continente, Açores, Madeira). ExpaTax applies the regional IRS reductions automatically when you set your tax residence on the cover page.
What if AT comes back with questions later?
On Prepared we hand you the full workpaper trail so you can respond yourself. On Signed & filed and Complex & priority, your accountant represents you directly: they signed the return, they handle the follow-up.
Can I switch packages later?
Yes. You can upgrade from Prepared to Signed & filed anytime before you submit, and we'll credit what you've already paid.
What if I also need to file in my home country?
ExpaTax focuses on your Portuguese filing. If you're a US citizen we'll flag your Form 1040 / FBAR obligations and can refer you to a US CPA for that filing; same for UK Self Assessment, Brazil DSDP, or Dutch M-form. But our pricing here covers your Modelo 3 only.
