What e-Fatura isAdding your NIF to receiptsFebruary validationDeduction categories and capsCommon mistakesCommon questionsWhat e-Fatura is
e-Fatura is the tax authority's invoice system. Every business in Portugal reports its invoices to the state, and when a shop, clinic, or landlord puts your NIF (your tax number) on an invoice, that invoice lands in your personal e-Fatura account. Once a year the accumulated invoices convert into tax credits that come straight off your income tax bill.
That is the whole design: the state gets visibility of business turnover, and you get paid, through deductions, for demanding invoices. It is why every Portuguese checkout asks "contribuinte?" and why the correct answer is almost always yes.
Adding your NIF to receipts
Nothing enters your account unless your NIF is on the invoice at the moment of purchase. There is no adding it later from a paper receipt, so you have to give your number at the point of sale: the pharmacy, the dentist, the supermarket, the mechanic, the restaurant. Many systems remember your NIF by phone number after the first time, and larger chains print it automatically once you are in their system.
Expats are usually the household's weak link here, either because saying a nine-digit number in Portuguese feels like a hurdle or because the purchase seems too small to matter. Carry the number in your phone, hand it over silently if you prefer, and let the totals accumulate. The credits have caps, but most households do not hit all of them.
February validation
Invoices arrive in e-Fatura with a merchant category, and the system sorts most of them into the right deduction bucket on its own. The rest sit in a pending state waiting for you, typically because the merchant's activity is ambiguous (a freelancer's invoice, a mixed retailer) or because the system wants to know if a purchase was personal or professional. Pending invoices earn nothing until classified.
From receipt to reviewed record
The purpose of the review is to resolve the information attached to your invoices.
- FindCheck the invoices recorded against your NIF.
- ResolveClassify or validate invoices that need more information.
- ReviewCompare the recorded invoices and the deductions shown.
Log in to e-Fatura
Use your Portal das Finanças credentials. Each household member has their own account, including children with NIFs, and each must be checked separately.
Clear the pending queue
Open the pending invoices and assign each to its category. Freelancers also mark whether an expense was business or personal.
Scan the classified list
Misfiled invoices happen. A dentist's invoice sitting in general expenses instead of health is money lost, and you can reclassify it.
Finish before the deadline
Validation closes in late February; in 2026 the date was 2 March because the usual deadline fell on a weekend. The deadline is now the last day of February each year. After it closes, the totals feed your return, and a short window in March lets you dispute the computed amounts.
Deduction categories and caps
Each category credits a percentage of your validated spending against your tax, up to a cap. The 2026 figures for the main categories:
| Category | Credit | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| General family expenses | 35% of spending | 250 per taxpayer (500 for a joint return) |
| Health | 15% | 1,000 per household |
| Education | 30% | 800 per household |
| Rent (permanent home) | 15% | 900 in 2026 |
| Nursing homes | 25% | 403.75 |
Households with three or more dependents get an uplift on several caps. On top of these, invoices from favoured sectors such as restaurants, hairdressers, vets, gyms, and vehicle repair return a slice of the VAT paid as a further credit; the sector list and percentages shift between budgets, so confirm the current ones rather than planning around them.
Worked example
Lena, filing alone, validated 2,000.00 of supermarket and household invoices and 800.00 of dental bills during the year, using round figures for illustration.
The general category hits its cap quickly while health rarely does, which is why a dentist's invoice misfiled as a general expense is money lost.
Common mistakes
- Foreign spending never enters e-Fatura. Health and education expenses paid abroad can still count, but only if you enter them manually in the return (Anexo H), with documents kept.
- Children need NIFs and their invoices need validating too, in their own accounts.
- Rent only counts when the landlord issues electronic rent receipts through the portal. A landlord who avoids this is costing you the credit.
- Freelancers who give their NIF for everything then skip the personal-or-business classification leave the whole queue unclassified.
- Arriving mid-year and only starting to give your NIF after the first annual return means the caps go unused. Start the week you get the number.
Common questions
Is it worth it for small purchases?
Yes, in aggregate. The general expenses category rewards volume, and a year of groceries clears its cap comfortably. No single receipt is significant; the total is.
What if a merchant did not report my invoice?
You can register an invoice manually in e-Fatura from the paper document. It is rare with established businesses and more common with small traders.
Do IFICI or NHR holders benefit from validating invoices?
Often less, because credits offset tax computed at progressive rates and regime holders may have little of it. Households with mixed income usually still benefit. Validate anyway; it costs minutes.
I missed the validation deadline. Is the year lost?
The automatic classifications still count, and health or education amounts can sometimes be corrected manually in the return itself. What is lost is the pending queue you never touched.
