- NIF
- Your Portuguese tax identification number. Needed for almost everything: renting, banking, contracts, and filing.
- Modelo 3
- The annual personal income tax return, filed in spring for the previous calendar year. Made up of a cover sheet plus anexos for each income type.
- IRS
- Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Singulares, the personal income tax itself. Not the American agency.
- e-Fatura
- The invoice system where your purchases accumulate against your NIF. Validating them each February feeds deductions on your return.
- IFICI
- The incentive regime that replaced NHR for new arrivals, aimed at scientific research and innovation roles. Often called NHR 2.0.
- Recibos verdes
- Literally green receipts: the invoicing system for freelancers and independent workers.
- IMI
- The annual municipal property tax, billed in instalments to property owners.
- Segurança Social
- The social security system. Freelancers make contributions based on declared income, with quarterly declarations.
